documentary:

Watching “Cocaine Cowboys” is like watching the highlights of Blow, Scarface and Casino for 2 hours straight. Lots of snorting, lots of killing, and “fokin Colombians.”

Up until the 70’s Miami was a place for old folks to retire and wait for life to end. But the easy acess to South America cause the cocaine import to flourish into town. The spike in drug trade jolted the local economy, so no one had any reason to complain.

But suddenly the cocaine wars started and produced casualties that no one had seen in their lifetimes. It took a national effort to put an end to the spiraling out of control violence and trade.

You need DIVX to watch the above documentary.

Thumbs up. Weird, just watched this last night. Cocaine’s a helluva drug, but it seriously built the current Miami skyline. Of course, this was in the era where someone like Phil Collins could play like, three cities in one night, and have his name spelled out in coke lines (I read this in popbitch ages ago, so can’t fully confirm). Expect a Jan Hammer soundtrack and a puffed-up former Ford Model.

I’d also recommend Time Magazine’s “Paradise Lost” expose, which really blew the lid on Miami’s coke trade corruption nationally.
